OT: "PUP"

The baby bird GooGull recognizes "do not pup as dg", but refuses to say anything about what "PUP" means. Naturally, it also says nothing about "DG", but it is obvious from the context that "DG" means "dangerous goods". Anyone know what "PUP" means?

Premium Unleaded Petrol ?

PULP in Australia used to be PULP

Even less context than usual here, but I'd guess "pack up".

Something to do with the newish and quite complex regulations regarding transport of lithium batteries, I'd guess.

I guess you could call 1-800-go-Fedex and ask them..

It's Fedex jargon for "package pickup" or something similar. Note the end of this URL:

13th commandment: Thou shalt not abrev.

That's what I thought first.. our ursine friend omitted the informaton that it appears on a FedEx label that is their version of an IATA label for handling of lithium batteries (we have to expect a certain degree of seasonal torpor).

Fedex version

If it means pick up, perhaps it refers to the handling when it is not on the aircraft. In any case, it's a directive to FedEx employees, and hopefully they're trained to do the right thing.

Packing is also very important with these things-- limits on the amount of material, must be accessible to the crew etc.

Yeah, whenever I order lithium batteries from Digi-Key, they have three brightly colored labels on the package, with all sorts of dire warnings. One is to require hazmat placards on the delivery truck, one is to forbid placement on passenger aircraft, and I forget what the other is, maybe to explain what in the package requires the other two labels. This was all for TWO tiny coin cells, by the way!

Neither of those gives a clue about "PUP"; talks about all of the other labels and requirements tho.

Not ONE word about "PUP" anywhere IN that document. The _only_ "clue" is the (spurious?) fact that the URL uses "PUP" as a part of it. Full translation of "do not pup as dg" would then be "do not PICKUP as DANGEROUS GOODS". Why cannot "they" make things *CLEAR* and un-ambiguos?

The label was similar to the left half of the .PNG image.

Not in this country. Young seals are merely pampered here. Even the thought of killing one will give you bad, bad karma :)

Because NBC (nobody cares). The real problem is TMA (too many acronyms) which is a symptom of excessive WSC (white space consumption) where TMA's are used to minimize the consumption of white space thus preventing a global disaster where AllTheWordsRunTogether. Fedex is part of the PCC (politically correct computing) initiative, where such considerations as TMA and WSC are considered a priority.

Please note that you are guilty of WII (withholding important information) in that you failed to mention the Li-Ion (lithium ion) batteries. In the future, it would be helpful if you would practice FUD (fully unambiguous disclosure) so that people trying to answer your RDQ (really dumb question) might have a FEC (fair and equitable chance) at answering. Your CIA (cooperation is appreciated) in the matter.

And all of that is consistent with semi-official documents with a back side that says (only) "this page is blank". LFIUWN (lets fill it up with nonsense).

"This page left blank intentionally"

I have, personally, checked many tens of thousands of those pages, to make *sure* they were not in fact blank.

Blank pages violate the PRA (Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980 and

1995), which require that all pages be filled with something readable, so that they cannot be reused for origami, paper airplanes, doodling, or require additional processing (shredding). For proper compliance, a blank page must consist solely of one FF (form feed) character. A blank page of LF (line feed), SP (space), CR (carriage return) characters, or combinations thereof, are not acceptable due to ecological concerns over the rapidly decreasing global supply of blank space. Remedial efforts by the space program to find blank space in outer space is currently restricted by budgetary concerns. Until a global solution is achieved, please make a voluntary effort to conserve space by using acronyms, abrevs., terse language, and simple thinking.

Perhaps you are actually reading a form of blank or free verse or a one line poem?

Poems come in many ways, Rhyme will be, what I will praise. Iambic pentameter or some such, Meter matters, oh so much.

Free verse has no rhyme or meter, temper, stanza or worth either, Ask a poet, one who knows, If it don't rhyme, it must be prose.

Maybe blank verse is the way, that the world thinks today, Perhaps the writers lack the time, To do their poems in verse and rhyme.

Art is what we make of it, Rhyme and meter and some wit, All I ask is that you curse, The recent plague of bad blank verse.
