OT Openoffice

Uh, you can always save the files as .doc files and then add 'x' to the file name. I bet all the mentioned programs will still open the files just fine. ;)

I'm now editor of the newletter for the NSW branch of the IEEE and I've just had my nosed rubbed in the fact that Libre Office 4.2 generates .docx files that Microsoft Word won't open.

Last night I downloaded Libre Office 4.3.5.2 and found that it made less of a hash of a complex .docx document I'd been sent that 4.2 had, but there were still issues.

I haven't had any feedback on whether 4.3.5.2 can generate .docx documents that the latest version of Microsoft word will open.

It seems likely that Microsoft is repeating for Libre Office the trick it pulled to sabotage Netscape, by getting the latest version of Word to generate output that doesn't match the older versions that Libre Office could deal with, in the same way that Explorer used to generate output that crashed Netscape.

It was well before Netscape.

The Microsoft mantra after Excel was first released was rumored to be "DOS ain't done until Lotus won't run." Opinion varies as to the truth of this (and the people who would really know probably know better than to say), but Lotus compatibility did seem to get rocky around then.
