OT: Free VPN recommendation

I thought I'd start using a VPN. No particular reason - I just think it's a good idea.

Before I go for a paid service, I thought I'd try out a free one. Any recommendations?

If its free, ask yourself why are they doing it?

There's a ton of freebies on the internet without an evil scheme lurking in the background. Many are not even supported by ads. I could list several reasons why they are provided for free but I shouldn't have to do that.

That is perfectly true. However, running a VPN used by a lot of people will cost a lot in transit fees, so the money has to come from somewhere.

If you want a VPN with no baggage and a low cost, you could rent a cheap virtual machine somewhere and run your own VPN on that. The answer to your original question depends a lot on why you want it. For example, do you want to appear to be in a different country, and if so which one? Do you just want to bypass needless censorship? Do you want to be anonymous? If so beware - its very hard to get it right and probably involves using Tor. Maybe you want some static IP addresses for a server but your service provider uses carrier-grade NAT and a VPN is the only solution.

Opera web browser has a free vpn service - so they can control what adds are pushed to you. That's OK I think.

Kaspersky had a free vpn service if you used their antivirus - I tried it out very early and it didn't actually hide my ip address. I gave it the big thumbs down, but it might be ok now.

Proton mail are set up to provide free email accounts. I think their VPN costs something but it may be free if bundled with their upgraded email service. I would put my money on them for low cost privacy.

My second choice would be AirVPN, run by a Italian privacy group. Good support but they are relatively expensive.

Try looking at the package called "privoxy" (spelling) for a free service of unknown quality.

Avoid Nord, Viper and most of the American based VPNs they have all had security troubles or have proven to hold more logs than they admit to.
