OT: Any BCIT EET Grads Here?

Any Electronics Technology grads from (BCIT) British Columbia Institute of Technology on SED?

After graduation, did you make any money in tech? What I mean is.. Did you earn better than a teenager working in McDonald's.

It's that bad here in the US :-(

Can't say that for circuit level design.

Analog guys should be able to find work. But not always locally, must be willing to relocate.

But do you think unemployment would be any better if McCain had won?

I think the main difference is that there might be a few trillion less on the debt, but the economy would still be largely the same -- no president of any party has ever been able to quickly move the economy. (And of course all politicians in a bad economy blame it on their predecessors, whereas opponents of all politicians in a good economy say the predecessor is the one who deserves the credit.)

This would most likely not have happened:

Especially in the current economy that can seriously backfire. Some people would even say that it will. Business owners have personally told me that increasingly onerous employment rules and regs are a real pain to them, and sometimes the reason for not hiring.

Hmm... I suspect you're correct.

The whole test of who's an employee and who's a contractor is very messy these days anyway, with more an more "employees" working from home using their own PCs, furniture, etc -- it definitely needs some reform, although I would think it would be in a matter wherein the feds end up with *less* taxes! ;-)

Well, the message relayed in that article is crystal clear: Milk corporate America and its people for an extra 7.3 billion. The risk is that especially much of corporate America will say "enough already" and adjust their affairs accordingly. Meaning more outsourcing. Then tax revenue begins to drop, except this time irrevocably. Some politicians need to re-acquaint themselves with well known effects such as the Laffer curve.

All I can say is that I regularly get assignments to design or re-design this, that and the other thing, perform design reviews, bring something through EMC cert, and so on. All very smart moves on the part of my clients because there's nearly always a few "Oh dang!" situations that are unearthed before it is too late.

Occasionally I suggest to clients to hire an analog guy when the workload becomes huge. Every time that has been a needle in the haystack search, very few good resumes trickling in. For example, I posted a rather juicy analog job in Florida on the busy LinkedIn engineer's group. 2 (as in two!) responses.

I agree, it's just that any effect such non-pushing of bills would have would likely take 2-3 years to have a visible impact.

Clearly if the economy and unemployment in 2012 are roughly the same as they are today, Obama won't be having a repeat performance.

They didn't have massive mortgage and bank crises lately?

Must respectfully disagree here. It would have the effect that moving business elsewhere would be initiated on a smaller scale. California has learned the hard way (or still not ...?) that making an investment and business climate less predictable can result in an exodus here and there. And that convincing businesses to come back is next to impossible once the trucks are rolling.

Yeah, but largely as a response to the happenings here in the U.S. Those other countries apparently have policies wherein the U.S. economy tanking, while still having a huge impact, only create limited-term damage.

Maybe because they aren't run by leftist-weenies quite so much?

Oh, wait, some of them are! :-)

Hmm... I wonder if someone's made a graph of, e.g., change in GDP over time vs. the leftist-weenie quotient of the governments of all the countries...

In general I tend to agree, but it's not like, e.g., France is going to be less socialistic than the U.S. even *if* Obama passes every leftist-liberal-weenie thought that crosses his mind, will it?

But to actually decrease unemployment (which has been hovrering close to 10% since last October) requires new business creation, and even with the most pro-business administrations that takes time.

But ok -- my 2-3 years estimate probably is pretty high. Still, anything the fed does that has a major POSITIVE impact on the economy in under, say, 6 months strikes me as absolutely lightning fast.

Obama is stuck in that he may very well know that cutting taxes on businesses would spur job growth, but since he wants to become known as the Man Who Passed the Public Healthcare Reform Bill, he needs to come up with nearly a trillion dollars in new income and other than platitudes such as soaking the rich, he can't fund it if he does cut taxes.

It's unclear to me if he's making a conscious decision to not promote pro-business legislation in that he feels long term heatlhcare reform is more important of it he's just not seeing the forest for the trees here in the first place. (Although one has to assume his advisors have made this all very clear to them -- if he's choosing to listen to them.)

Exactly -- so if you have enough bone-headed states that follow California's lead, sooner or later the jobs are just gone for good (e.g., moving overseas), and getting them back is very slow (years, again, in my estimate).
