How about the availability/licensing of ammo and/or its constituents? (Th at's basically rhetorical- I don't feel like Googling it.) Making a gun is easy but ammo is trickier, though anyone who keeps chicken and knows the ri ght chemistry can make their own gunpowder.

OTOH many of us could probably whip up a usable coilgun or railgun in a w eek. (I'm not going to bother Googling whether those are covered too.)

Not usually - most of the population has been disarmed, after all. There are some gang related shootings - mostly of each other, but with some collateral damage.

Crime only gets worse when the general public are not allowed to protect themselves. Mainly because the leaders actually don't care about you, only about themselves getting lead in the ass. Something happens in a community that involves guns, people get all emotional over it and all it takes is a very few to go crying to the GOV, which is what the GOV is waiting for, to remove the right for others to protect themselves.

It's a proven fact that more people die in just about everything else you can think of, but you don't see the GOV jumping in on that do you?

The per-capita death rate from firearms is about 10 times higher in the USA compared with Australia, though it has to be conceded that a large slice of that is in the form of suicides. One would have to suspect that if a person is intent on committing suicide, then they will, and if a gun isn't available, they'll use some other way.

The 30 times difference in homicides using firearms is less easy to argue away - I would suspect that the majority of firearm homicides in the USA are spur of the moment things that wouldn't otherwise have occurred (i.e. by a different means) if a gun hadn't been available.

So while it's true that the disarmed population cannot protect itself against those villains and terrorists who obtain and use guns despite their illegality, the situation, at the moment, seems to be that the population is still safer overall.

That might change, of course, if Paris style events become commonplace.

There are so many guns here that it's a practical impossibility to confiscate them all. The gangs and criminals will always have guns.

Guns don't protect worth a damn. The person most likely to be killed by a g un you own is you - generally by your own hand - closely followed by your n earest and dearest. Home invaders are way less likely victims.

The NRA follows the US newspapers right across the country, and any gun own er who shoots a burglar gets national publicity. The rather more frequent o ccurrence of shooting a family member after mistaking them for a burglar ge ts rather less attention.

Suicide and car accidents kill rather more people than murder, and there ar e government initiatives to reduce both. Getting guns out of the house does make successful suicide less likely - shooting yourself works faster and m ore reliably than taking an overdose.

The second amendment does talk about a well-regulated militia, but the amendment was loosely drafted, so you can own guns without knowing how to handle them safely, or how to cooperate to use them effectively.

And he's mentioned shutting down mosques. We don't do that. We arrest and prosecute criminals, on probable cause. We close criminal enterprises if they are criminal enterprises.(*) We do *not* close places of worship.

Probably. ASIO is silly enough to make the information providers record whe re you surfed to to. On the other hand, they got 18 warning that the perpet rator of our most recent terrorist event seemed to have gotten battier shor tly before he held a bunch of hostages for sixteen hours before shooting on e of them and getting shot when the police promptly moved in (and the polic e managed to shoot four of the hostages, one fatally, as well as one of the ir own, while moving in).
