I've used quite a lot of these, cheap, simple, does what it says on the box.
Any alternative, second sourced, more modern design, cheap?

Yep, ditto.
There are second-source devices, but most resellers stick with the (/\\/\\oto) OnSemi product.
Not sure what you expect a more modern design would do/have that the humble
34063 doesn't - except maybe a higher Vin tolerance or beefier output switch.And bang-for-buck they are hard to beat.
I suspected that ;-)
