Most of the science from Hubble is done using the spectrographs.

The images are used to choose exactly where to point them. And whenever that is done you typically get a grotty artists impression of whatever it is. They hardly ever show the spectra on the Hubble site (not sexy enough).

There are notable exceptions of important images like the Hubble deep fields done for cosmology and hunts for Einstein rings. But a lot of the most popular classical Hubble shots are of the faint fuzzies as catalogued by Messier only much much more detailed than ground based. The pillars of creation image has become iconic for Hubble.

NASA does plenty for science. Manned space flight does very little. Most of the "scientific research" done on the ISS would not pass muster at a high school science fair. Sad but true. Much of it is just a rerun of what Skylab and MIR have already accomplished.

It helped the *public* imagine these things. Scientists were perfectly well aware of the huge numbers of galaxies in space and have been since the first radio telescopes started showing many more active galaxies in deep surveys than was predicted by Hoyle's Steady State universe model.

Hubble and Chandra through the images they produce are very important in the public understanding of science. It is a lot harder to sell a crucial HEP cloud chamber track image or a huge list of very precise coordinate measurements to the public but that work too is important.

The trouble is that one instrument in this sort of super class is usually enough. I regret that they did not build a pair since the Kodak made mirror would have been perfect.

But there would still have needed to be a repair mission whatever because the spook bird builders withheld crucial data and techniques to handle the flexing of solar panels as the vehicle goes in and out of the Earth's shadow. The same issues also affected Hipparchos to some extend although its mission allowed for collection of data that could be used to quantify the various residual uncorrected errors. That group know more about stablised orbital platforms than anyone else.

NASA bent over backwards to keep the Mars rovers running and are still using the deep space network (which has been specially enhanced) to stay in touch with the Voyagers that are now crossing the heliopause.

I don't see that they could have done more.
