My wife could be using a Linux box. She spends almost all of the PC time in the web browser. She uses a spread sheet to keep track of the business stuff and she plays some old DOS games.

The only thing I think she does that is not easy to get on Linux is use TurboTax.

My mother only uses a web browser, a digital camera interface and a file manager. She mostly uses it to get the pictures off her camera and onto memory sticks or into emails.

Where I work, many of the PCs are used to run a very buggy business application these would have to stay as Windows XP-Pro boxes. The application is not claimed to work on any other version of Windows.

Many of the other machines at work would be far better off as Linux boxes with only one Icon on the "desktop". The machines are used mostly just for a single purpose.

These days you also need to get something like TurboTax ported to Linux...

If you are trying to do really high quality photography, there is the issue of monitor profiling under linux. For the longest time, you couldn't even color correct under windows. [The .icm file under windows is easily generated with a "spyder".) Gimp2 is only 8 bits per color and cinepaint is a bear to install, so some programs still require windows.

I can't think of a single program I would want that only runs on a mac.

This is what happens when you have a product that's already pretty mature -- there are already so many features that adding more probably won't grow your sales much, so instead you decide that surely lots of people must be pirating your software, so perhaps sales would grow if you could eliminate some of that?

Personally I rather think it ought to be the U.S. government providing tax preparation software anyway...

I've read a report hat it's precisely those wiretap-and-warrant back-doors which allowed the recent compromises of GMail. The malware which got into browsers within Google seems to have enabled the attackers to access the "internal intercept systems."

This brings to mind a story:

My mother has a friend who does her taxes completely wrong every year. She is a nice little old grandmother but she simply can't add, subtract or even put the right numbers into the right boxes correctly. Every year, the government sends perhaps a dozen corrections. One year someone asked her why she doesn't get someone to do them for her. She responded with "They want money to do it".

Yeah, but how are you going to do that without buying a Windows license, which was one of the goals (otherwise, for those "generic" web browsing/word processing/etc. needs, you might as well just run Windows in the first place)?

You do know that wine has not been the best emu for a MS Windows session for a very long time, right?

And no, you do not have to buy a Windows license. All you have to do is be the owner of a valid copy of the version of Windows you intend to run it under. That should not be a problem.

You could also petition TT to write a Linux version of the EZ file app. OR you could probably easily do it in Excel. It will pipe the data over to the Federal PDF file for you too.
