Flyback transformer design confusion!!

Nov 07, 2006 88 Replies

Hi Fred,

how do I follow that link? I could do with a laugh....

honestly, I cant believe how wrong his posts were! I initially assumed it was a typo - its easy enough to do, hell I've even bolloxed up the calculation that way myself in the past, but cross-checking calculations caught it.

But no, he really thinks thats the case.

Cheers Terry

Hmmm. Doesn't work here either. I don't know why.

This one should get you there.

Thanks, Fred.

Yep, that worked, thanks. isnt GG awful though. fairly amusing, and again a basic misunderstanding. which would be funnier- his flybacks, or his LNAs?

Oh Oh here c*ms Bartoli on Givens as they catch fire and in their incandescency together try to light a flame ... Oh Oh The "hot spot" of their frenzy is of pseudo intellectual delusions of grandeur which in my opinion should be crowned with the formation of the turnon. psyco.design group.

BTW I always thought we should talk electronics here. They are other hogshit NGs for this stuff.

Hi Fred.

Looking at the thread I noted he called you a delinquent. How did he get that information? Have you been snooping around peoples homes without low noise equipment?

Certainly not! I've on my desk one of the 200pV/rtHz preamp prototypes I worked on: should be enough to not get caught. But we sure don't need any special equipment to hear the noise lemonjuice is doing.

Thanks, Fred.

LOL. If any doubt was possible, now there's not anymore: you're just a wannabe PA, but you're still way out of his league.

Thanks, Fred.

I'd add:

we tried, but you failed to grasp elementary physics.

if not, show me where my maths is wrong.

and another, entirely different hand-wavey argument that lemonjuice MUST be wrong:

lemonjuice maintains that only the change in current counts,

dE = OFF = 0.5*L*(Ipeak - Imin)^2

P = F*OFF

OK, then how about this interesting little factoid: to move a flyback converter from DCM (sawtooth current) to CCM (trapezoidal current) one increases the load power (Rl decreases). Assuming the converter was operating at the boundary of DCM/CCM, the primary current simply "lifts up" to become a trapezoid, so the change in current Ipeak - Imin is constant. this can clearly be seen in the transfer function of a CCM flyback, which is independant of duty cycle (for constant input voltage).

but according to lemonjuice, the energy transferred OFF = 0.5*L*(Ipeak - Imin) is constant, and as the switching frequency F has not changed, the output power likewise has not changed. which is a pretty cool trick, seeing as to make this happen we decreased Rl, thereby increasing the output power.

OTOH if you use "my" approach, one gets:

dE = INGWELL_RIGHT = 0.5*L*(Ipeak^2 - Imin^2)

P = F*INGWELL_RIGHT

which increases (by, coincidentally, the exact right amount).

What do you expect from lemon juice? Everyone knows it makes crappy electrolyte for batteries.

Hi Fred, Observing the thread it seems you have some grudge with the guy. You should know that this is a place for constructive engineering talk so just stop wasting people's time with filth. Why don't you fix an appointment with the guy and fight him? Then hopefully you can pose over a victory if that boosts your self esteem. Your rambling here on non technical issues is very childish and cowardly. It only helps to make this newsgroup disgusting

LMFAO Oh gosh another lover ... man I will soon start a jealousy war here.

A pity your country doesn't give a s*it about you ... especially if you get a bullet in your head.

A bullet in the head? Is that what happened to you? It would explain a lot of things.

I would add a nice site to decipher Fred Bartoli's french character is

Thanks, Fred.

Even better: I also know how much energy a capacitor stores.

Am I not smart? ;-)

Thanks, Fred.

Flyback? Oh yeah he has surely learned what "flyback" is with his crap returning to him with astounding accuracy.

Why decrease Rl to increase output power?

1) The power given by the expression above is that of the inductance at the primary coil. To find the power dissipated in the load you would have to calculate the average current flowing through the load.

2) You don't have to vary Rl when you change the load power demands. The flyback transformer regulates itself over a large value of input voltages and currents. If the load demands are below its Power capabilities the flyback transformer operates in discontinous mode by shutting itself inbetween cycles.
