Ferrite Core Shopping

So I try my luck to find a 14/8 size ferrite pot core on

Arrrghh... All I see is a list of part numbers from various ferrite manufacturers with no manufacturers listed in the table! I don't know every ferrite part number from every manufacturer!

That means I can't find datasheets easily. What a pita... It took me about 20 minutes to identify one part number (TDK). This sucks..

Anybody buy cores from this company?

Yes I do. You have to know before hand exactly the part you want. They will custom gap cores for you so they are worth dealing with just for that.

Several years ago, Allstar decided to become more difficult to work with: no more free samples for small customers, less effort to provide knowledgeable staff, etc. Even though Allstar is closer to me (just 200 miles S), I switched over to Eastern Components and have been much happier.

I also suggest you talk with your magnetics suppliers about what cores they prefer to work with. You can waste your time and money picking out something from a webpage or catalog, only to find out that no one else has spec'd it, so lead times are long and costs are high.

There are a lot of PITA aspects to switchmode design. Sourcing cores is one of them. Sorry. Suggest you demand a raise. Paul Mathews

Bummer... So I have to look at the Allstar linecard, visit one of many core manufacturers, pick a part and then back to Allstar to see if it's stocked. Back and forth...back and forth...back and forth...until I find a part number I can use that Allstar has in stock. Huhhh.. :(

Ahhh...that sounds good. :) Ping the core makers to see what they like making.

Something like this..

"Dear Core Manufacturer What core types are your machines generally pumping out?" :)

Well..not quite in those words, but you get the idea..

Thanks.

And resist the temptation to squeeze in the smallest form factor that does the job. Chances are the purchasing guys will run into a supply snag some day for whatever reason. Per Murphy's law that usually happens a couple days before your anniversary trip to Hawaii ...

I'll make a list of 'backup' cores and design in space for a variety of sizes. :)

Good! Plus an alternative bobbin and ECO-released assembly procedure. It can keep the marital bliss without your wife even knowing ;-)
