Excel Problem

Open then in Open Office. Install the free Girl Scout spread sheet merging macro. Click "merge" and then save the result in *.xls format. :>

It may not always come pre-loaded with XP-Pro computers. Did come with nearly all my PCs though. I do not like Version 8.0 much, has a copy&paste bug that rears its ugly head at times where it just doesn't want to paste. Not sure how version 9 fares but they all have the database and that's the only item that matters to me:

Usually it's the same with many such products, the older the more stable. I run all my book-keeping stuff with it. Business records, tax prep records, parts inventory, billing, all databases.

For example if a client wants to know how many hours I am into their XYZ project I can tell them within seconds. Click filter, enter project name, click report -> tada.

I use "Responsive Time Logger" for those occasional by-the-hour projects.

But it looks like "Works" is cheap enough to see how it might work for GS registration data... the wife informs me that Excel is just what our local neighborhood is using... NOT cast in stone by the "down-town empire" ;-)

For me it's a stop watch and MS-Works. The stop watch is much more practical since I can carry it into the lab where the laptop often needs to be turned off for radio silence. Pretty much all my assignments are by the hour. Comes with the type of assignment, usually along the lines of "We have had with this design, disect it and come up with a better one".

When I moved to the US I was a bit shocked to see how even companies used spreadsheets for apps that clearly called for a database. Reporting was often a major hassle, except for pre-canned stuff such as (freaking expensive) custom QC software. So I introduced freely configurable databases right away. People loved them.

The topper was the German equivalent of the IRS. Occasionally they had a question because our office wasn't too used to consultants and then I usually used that to get in some exercise, did the five miles to their office by bike, nice forest trail. Once the guy asked me "Now how do you manage to computer-fill those pesky monthly sales tax returns?" ... "MS-Works, takes about one minute." ... "WHAT?"

Check out your grandkid's computers. If any came with XP-Home chances are they have MS-Works pre-loaded, so you guys can kick the tires. Databases will take some learning, like how to format columns, do math, create reports. But that learning curve sure will be worth it.

Oh, and don't even try the database in OpenOffice. It is a nice program (although a memory hog) but its database is IMHO terrible.

Try Open Office 3 from Sun. Its freeware, that works.

I had MS works on the PC that died recently. I don't have the program by itself, and the restore disk only works on that motherboard so I installed Open Office on another computer and salvaged all my 'Works' files.

I know it's hard for you to believe, DimBulb, but that wasn't the question.

That's a good idea. I'm sure you'd love to have all the personal information on the scouts.

You do if you do not want to be considered a total retard by those that know what is going on.

Oh! Too late!

Again you miss the point, like any retard that claims to have a brain does.

The only thing that needs to be posted, you retarded f*ck, is the header row. And yes, I KNOW there IS a header row, because unlike you, I actually do have a brain, and it actually has more than two firing neurons in it, which you will never be able to claim.

No, AlwaysWrong, I didn't miss the point. It's right there between your shoulders.

Who cares. Don't copy the header row. I suppose I did have to tell you that much, DimBulb. Brain? You are funny. Stupid as a stone, but a funny stone.

Reply to

No, dumbfuck, it is DO copy ONLY the header row, you boneheaded ditz.

You did no such thing, dumbass.

You are an idiot. A total retard. Your stupidity extends beyond that of both Roy and the Cranium retard.

That's useful, DimBulb; a spreadsheet with only a header row.

Because you cannot understand, incredibly dim one.

From you, AlwaysWrong, that's a supreme compliment. You're too stupid to know what stupid is.

It is useful for those of us that do spreadsheets and know how they operate. That rules idiots like you out.

With it, I could make a spreadsheet that merges both sheets together, while the original data remains intact. Not that you would have any clue about such things after making such a retarded remark as you have done here.
