I count 13 elements on the Battelle antenna. However, the driven element looks very much the same. Note the round thing on the folded dipole at the top of: and compare with the eBay photo. Also, note that the mount is very much the same. However, there are no vinyl caps covering the elements, so they're not exactly identical. Close enough, methinks.

Maybe, but there's another problem which I didn't mention. The elements are designed for aesthetics, not function. In order for each pair of elements to be the correct 0.5 wavelength, the length would need to include the boom diameter. On the one I bought and returned, the length did NOT include the RF path around the outside of the boom resulting in gross mistuning. I could buy one of the pictured eBay antennas and make some measurements, but I don't need another misdesigned antenna.

Incidentally, in order to match a 200-300 ohm folded dipole, a 4:1 coaxial balun is required. Something like this: There's not enough room inside the round thing on the folded dipole for a balun.

Even reputable companies make mistakes designing Wi-Fi yagi antennas: MFJ didn't have the boom path problem, but did manage to design a 200 ohm antenna instead of 50 ohms. They then used a ferrite bead to "fix" the VSWR problem.

GPS is RHCP (right hand circular polarization). It would work with a linear polarization, but would be orientation sensitive and have a

-3dB polarization loss.

Same here. Hard to tell without numbers but methinks my guess(tm) is fairly close to the mark.

In air at hundreds or thousands of feet, the beam diverges and is also attenuated by the air. We are lucky they produce enough to burn the target and produce results. So a mere reflective coating or mirrors mounted on the target will not return the beam to the source. On a lab bench with up-close proximities, it does.

A high powered laser can burn a sputter made mirror. The reflect high power, the mirror has to be a copper clad surface or a gold clad 'first surface' mirror. Most high power mirrors are copper, and part of that is that they also heat up.

If it reflected 100% there would be no heating. Since there is heating, this connotes that there must be some dissipation within the medium. Since the energy is all light, then the logical conclusion is that it is not all being reflected. Some is being absorbed.

We are lucky to make solar farms down here that heat up sodium masses for heating up water into steam and using that to turn a turbine. Quite lossy inasmuch as we have no means of converting the gathered light directly to electrical power.

Yuck. I believe a tether is more accurate, at least for the balloon.

I believe that's the objective of this exercise. At best, I could conjure some way to make the debris fall slower, so as not to do as much damage. Fire an arrow into the drone that then ejects one or more inflated balloons. The added air resistance of the balloons will slow down the descent.

That might be considered aerial piracy. While it is apparently acceptable to destroy an irritating drone in flight, it is not acceptable to steal it for parts or sale on eBay. However, if that's your intent, it might be easier to just setup a GPS pseudolite to spoof the location, and convince the drone that "home" is elsewhere.

That's certainly unsettled law. Many believe drones fall under the same rules as other aircraft, which would make shooting them down, even over your property illegal. You do not own the airspace over your property. Whether a jury would convict or a DA even to bother with someone whacking one with a camera looking in your window, is another issue.

Yep. I just wanted to specify the parameters. Swat the drone, but make sure its trajectory thereafter is controlled AND safe.

Many drones have such a small cross-section that hitting one with an arrow is iffy and are too fragile to hold the arrow even if you do hit it, which is why I was thinking along sticky/netting lines-

...and balloons still offer little to no control over *where* it lands. It could fall at a very few feet per second and still hurt someone or scratch the paint on your neighbor's car. Hence the tether.

You could go the other way and give the balloons enough lift that the drone goes up and keeps going, but that sounds expensive.

Well, I could have mentioned that I didn't assume them to be harvestable "wild" machinery. No reason I can't just stack them next to the firewood and call the cops to come take them away or something. The owners can have them back.

That would be fun too, but it would also be bad Part-15-wise for any other GPS device that happened by, like a self-driving car.

That's not the whole story; a strong laser beam can burn a tunnel through the air, literally creating a kind of anti-light-pipe that defocuses the light.

A low power laser can be aimed at the retroreflectors left by Apollo 11, 14, 15, on the moon, and the reflected light is apparently easy to detect. Air attenuation and initial beam divergence aren't a big issue there.

No problem. Like the Mars landers bouncing ball landing method, something similar could be arranged for a falling drone. I suggest squirting a fair quantity of expanding urethane foam at the drone. The urethane mix can be made sticky, which would then attach itself to the drone. After about a minute, the reaction begins, which produces copious quantities of gas bubbles, which expands the foam 12 or more times the initial volume. That would encapsulate the drone in a thick layer of rapidly hardening foam. By the time it hit the ground, the foam will be fairly hard allowing it to cushion the crash landing by dispersing the energy over a larger area of the foam and drone. This would also absorb most of the energy allowing the drone to be recovered and sold for parts on eBay. Should the liquid foam miss the drone, it would harden and fall slowly to earth, slowed by air resistance. I should probably patent this.

What the police take away with them is "evidence". My personal experience is that such "evidence" is difficult to have returned to the rightful owner and often sold out the back door. Giving the "evidence" to the police is like giving it away. Better to run your own drone salvage operation.

FCC Part 15 only covers intentional and incidental radiators. A jammer or spoofer is not classified as either. To the best of my knowledge, there is no FCC type certification procedure specifically for jamming or spoofing transmitters. These are usually specified under the same service as which they're jamming. However, GPS is a government owned and operated service, which are not covered by the FCC rules-n-regs. This should cover the various acts, rules, and codes:
