That's how I did it in a circuit but sans MMIC, on account of their rather large gain tolerances. To my delight there is now an abundance of really fast opamps so I didn't have to resort to a discrete design or ye olde uA733 this time.

Yeah, it's probably easier to make the main gain path DC coupled, and servo it with an opamp thing off to the side. There would have to be some semi-ugly level shifting between stages (two stages, probably) and the final stage would have to have its low side not at ground, but that's not lethal.
