Compander?

The NE570 dual compander is still available, works pretty well and is easy to use. (actually you need it as a compressor).

Analog devices are still producing the SSM2166.

While designed for use with a microphone it can be used with line level signals. AMZFX have some info which may be useful - and even a board layout.
