If this is the only electronics project you'll ever doing, then you are right. Otherwise it might be worthwile to invest some time in microcontroller programming, which will pay off for other projects.

And if you have already some programming experience, I guess the time you already invested with standard logic and in this newsgroup for the project is longer than implementing it with a PIC :-)
