The only SoCal wine that I like is Callaway Chardonnay.

All the really good California wine comes from Sonoma County (north of SF).

I drink both. I like 'em hearty, full-bodied.

What do you recommend?

I have a current client in Adelaide, and am nurturing a possible chip design opportunity in Auckland.

I can certainly attest to the high quality of NZ whites from the Marlborough and Hawks Bay regions. However, they are not much cheaper (if at all) than equally good local West Australian whites in my opinion. Perhaps being closer to "the land of the long white cloud", people in the eastern states get a better price break than we do.

I've liked the one's I've drunk. We've not run into anything amazing. or even particularly interesting, but most of the Australian wines you can easily get hold of in Europe fall into the same catagory. The remarkable stuff is less easily accessible.

Nah, the good stuff is from El Dorado County. We are members at this one:

There is a bumper sticker out here that reads "El Dorado makes wine, Napa makes auto parts". Of course you can't drive that truck into Napa or it might suffer bullet holes.

We've actually narrowed our varietal choices down to one for the most part - Sauvignon Blanc. As Ross H suggested in his post, almost any Marlborough region Sauv-blanc is good. Hawke's Bay s-b's are up there too.

Our favourite is St Clair, then Monkey Bay. Stoneleigh is quite respectable.

If it includes a trip down there (Auckland) the take the trip.

Don't know what the ES-ers see for prices, Ross. We are in Perth. I haven't found a West Australian, or for that matter an Australian S-B that compares for drinkability with St Clair or Monkey Bay. Even Te Henga, Montana and several others we've experienced beat the heck out of our local produce.

HEMA still gets occasional cases of good stuff. Albert Heijn now sells good quality mass market Australian wines, but hardly anything over ten euor per bottle.

The Nijmegen branch of De Gouden Ton does better, but Marcel has a personal preference for French wines.

We buy occasional cases from a one-man firm - New World Wines - who specialises in Australian boutique wines - who sells to the two and three star restaurants in the Netherlands, and a bunch of others who aspire to that status. We pay a little les than we would in Australia.
