The Half Moon Bay cranberry bean (Italian borlotti bean) season just opened. The season is short here, pretty much just September.

I won't ask if you subscribe to the "poop report". I think the issue is the high concentrations of sulphites in the dried fruit- maybe a couple of thousand milligrams in 2lb.

"Inhalation of this gas in concentrations of 8-12ppm in air causes throat irritation, coughing, constriction of the chest, lachrimation, and smarting of the eyes. A concentration of 150 ppm can be endured only a few minutes, because of eye irritation and the effect on the membranes of the nose, throat and lungs. Exposure to a concentration of 500 ppm by volume in air for a few minutes is very dangerous".

Been there, done that - spent a week on the bog with my sphincter reaching down for a drink of water!!!

These beans are quite benign in that respect. When we cook Red Beans & Rice, or Boston Baked Beans, or cassoulet, an overnight soak and rinse eliminates most of the anti-personnell effects.

To each his own tastes, I suppose.

Ah well - there's always cabbage.
