and "Atmel (San Jose) has also ordered a 10-day shutdown for non- manufacturing employees. It has also implemented a hiring freeze and put strict controls on all discretionary spending."

Damn, no more slipping a remote control helicopter disguised as a "rotor motor" into your Farnell order!

Dave.

If the c**** go down I'll be very, very, f***** annoyed. If they're in such bad nick they should have grabbed the f****** Mchip offer while it was still on the f***** table. Jeez, only switched to the nice AVR last year, after 16 years of wrestling with f***** PICs and now the Atmel b******* look like they'll be f****** me over. So Atmel will wipe out my intellectual investment and the credit crunch has already wiped out my cash investments. What's the f****** point of it all?. I think I'll emigrate somewhere and grow poppies for a living :)

I smelled this coming around 1.5 years ago, seeing projects snuffed abruptly... Colorado Springs.

It's not over till it's over. In this environment, even the best of the institutions are pulling in their necks, and trimming their budgets. That's a good sign, not a bad sign. Sorry. It may not be good for the economy, but it's good for the company.

While most are pulling inside the shell, others have an opportunity=20 to take market share. Either way it's a gamble.

Offhand, their loss doesn't look bad -- just $4.7 million on $400 million in revenue. Seems like they're acting sensibly in cutting back too.

I don't know what their overall financial position is-- I didn't dig that deeply.

This scaling back is the kind of positive feedback loop that only makes the problem worse - many current smaller rc helicopters are built around atmega48's ;-)
