Why? When I can just download it from OnSemi anyway? The original company no longer exists for this stuff of course, but the MC1xxxx is functionally identical.

Personally I prefer to get a datasheet from the semi mfr directly.

The function is a scale of ten counter, with individual outputs.

This could be implemented internally in many different ways.

It might be a synchronous 4-bit counter with feedback and a decoder.

Or maybe a twisted-ring counter, with all the required setup logic and xor decoders.

Or a shift-register.

The internal design isnt of much consequence 9as long as the logic outputs and edge overlaps or underlaps stay the same) as these are generally used as "black boxes".

In fact the RCA data sheet from the 1975 COS/MOS data book describes the 4017 as a five stage Johnson decade counter. See

The virtue of this rather inefficient use of bistables is that you get spike-free decoded outputs.
