Where is this nightmare? Almost everywhere has grandfather clause exemption s for that kind of scenario, so people, especially older people, can't be t axed out of their homes. And it's not uncommon now for localities to provid e property tax relief for older residents who meet certain income and net w orth restrictions, and those restrictions can be quite high.
Where I live, near Seattle. It takes a pretty low income (less than $40K) to qualify. And in some cases, all you get is a defferal. So you may not have to pay the tax, but it will come out of your estate eventually.
