when is it proper to use contact cleaner?

i am a bit confused about contact cleaner.

what does contact cleaner do to electrical surfaces?

how does it clean connector edges better than just wiping them off with a rag?

do you have to unconnect connectors before cleaning them with contact cleaner or can you clean them by just spraying them in situ.

have you ever repaired anything with it? or is it just for keeping things looking tidy?

Regards, Konrad

Hi Konrad...

Can't speak to the chemical and/or mechanical bits of contact cleaner, but I can promise you there's no comparison between wiping a contact with a cloth and using a bit of cleaner. Night and day, apples and oranges. :)

Somewhat along the same lines as washing a greasy old rag that you cleaned your car engine with by soaking it in a tub of water, or washing it with a good detergent :)

Take care.

Contact cleaner is invaluable when it comes to cleaning the wiping surface of potentiometers or connector sockets where you just can't get an oily rag small enough to get inside there. Horses for courses
