TV sudden total failure

I got a used Emerson 19" TV a month ago, it has worked fine, on for several hours each evening since then. The set is about 9 years old.

Last night, tried it, it was dead. Power switch had no effect. There have been no power surges, electrical storms, etc.

In decades of TV use, I've never seen this failure mode. Usually, a TV picture starts to go, or a tuner goes bad, etc. Not sudden total failure.

How normal is this?

I don't have a lot of test equipment. Anything I can easily check inside?

TIA

The power supply section or one of the scan amplifier stages most likely have some parts that failed. The set would need proper troubleshooting to locate the problem. There are many things that can cause the set to go dead. The older the set, the lower the reliability.

ms: "dead" is a common failure mode for any electrical device..... light bulbs, televisions, stereos, computers, etc. HOWEVER ...this symptom can have a plethora of faults related to it so without a knowledgeable tech opening up the television and actually performing technical troubleshooting and testing there is NO WAY to tell you over the internet or the telephone what exactly the problem is and how much it will cost to repair.... could be easy (cheap to fix) or difficult (expensive to fix).... you would be best advised to TAKE your television to a service shop for at the very least a repair cost estimate so you can make an intelligent repair or replace decision... with facts instead of wild guesses.

Look for the start-up resistor/s in the PSU primary, always high value - often go high or O/C, don't try to take measurements around the switch-mode control circuit with power on, if you succeed in switching on the power device - it will go bang! Also look for any low value/high voltage 'lytics - test by replacement.

Thanks to all. Surely sounds like it needs troubleshooting and circuit work.

Not worth it, will look at garage sales for another one. Analog TV is only useful for another 2 years, IIRC. Then I will have to buy a converter box.

Is it in standby mode when 'off' ? My JVC AV21H2 did the same. The clue was that the standby led wasn't illuminated. There's an internal fuse in my case that blew. Possibly caused by a transient on the ac mains supply.
