Troubleshooting Problem with Erratic LCD Backlight

The backlight on my 17 inch computer monitor did not light when I booted my computer. However, I switched it off, then on again and it lighted for a moment; then it flickered and faded off again. I repeatedly switched the monitor off and on with the same result until it finally stayed on. Same problem, same fix the next day.

What is wrong with this monitor? Is it the lamp or a capacitor, transformer, or something else? Is it worth fixing DIY? I thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge & experience.

May be a bad connection.

Samsung SyncMaster 171V

I have check all the [external] connectors/connections.

One I get it stay on, there's no problem... unless I try to use a screen saver (blank) or allow it to go into standby or hibernation (or shut it down).

Try flexing the monitor casing when it is acting up. If there is a bad connection inside flexing the case slightly can sometimes show it.
