JL Audio 300/2 Amp problem

Mar 20, 2005 3 Replies

I'm trying to diagnose and repair a "scratchy" right channel in a JL Audio car amplifier, but JL must guard their service manuals well because I can't find anything on the net at all. Anyone know of a source for service manuals? Or perhaps a really good generic primer on car power amplifiers?

Thanks,

East Coast Electronic Repair: It's hard to say without having the unit in my hands.A lot of clowns online talk like pro's. It needs to be tested.Does it run hot?Does it shut down? I do repair, & i'll try to help the best i can,but again, i can't conclude anything by q&a. Let me know, East Coast Electronic Repair

It doesn't shut down, or run hot, the right channel is scratchy at all volume levels. I did open it up and take a brief poke around, there are two big coils on the circuit board and they were touching each other with noticable charing on one of them. Seems like they might be likely culprits, but I wanted to get ahold of a shematic and/or a service manual.

I do know a fair bit about electronics, but it's mostly theory, a bit short on the actual troubleshooting experience... and definately not much about car audio power amps.

Don't forget, anything going into an amplifier will be amplified-including noise. The problem could also be failing volume&tone controls.Or some other noise that originates in the pre-amp stage.Or anything before the amp for that matter.
