Hi,
I think it depends on your boot loader. U-boot (formerly named ppcboot) needs a pImage. (AFAIK it is named pImage in 2.4.x and uImage in 2.6.x.x). To generate this pImage/uImage the tool "mkimage" is used. This tool is shipped with u-boot.
