UPS (backup power) warn against connecting powerstrips to the output to create more outlets. Why is that?
My unit has two outputs only, one for monitor and one for PC. However, I would like to add my DSL modem to it as well since it draws very little power and makes a big difference in the "quality of life during brownout" -- if the modem gets rebooted, I'd have to wait a few minutes to get back internet.

They probably warn against it to avoid overloading the unit. I use powerstrips hooked into my UPS with no ill effects, however I make sure I don't turn on all those devices at the same time...
to keep some moron from trying to plug in 2 or 3 computers on a single UPS. You'll be fine with the DSL so use 'em but I'd suggest covering the extra outlets so no one would accidently plug high powered device into the UPS like a vacuum cleaner.
I expect connecting your DSL modem to the UPS using a powerboard would cause no problems. something like a laser printer however would be a different matter....

They probably say that for folks who are math illiterate, and can not even add numbers together to see what total power consumption they are plugging into the unit. I kid you not, there are LOTS of people out there today who cannot add two three-digit numbers together. When they got out of school they said, "hey, I am not going to be a mathematician, so why do I have to pay any attention to, or remember what I learned?"
I have met grade school MATH teachers who cannot figure out how to figure gas milage on a car :-(
Place I worked at had a 300 watt ups to supply a data logger to monitor environmental chambers during a power failure.
A week after it was installed there were two 100 watt incandescent desk lamps plugged into it as well as the data logger. "but we couldn't read the printout when the power was off . . ." These were PhD chemists.
What UPS makes such demands? They do request you not plug a power strip surge protector into such outlets. But that is something completely different, electrically, from a power strip. Did you post what they wrong word for word and letter for letter - or just wildly assume they were discussing something completely differernt - a power strip.
