Recently opened up a 120v,60hz Coffee machine, and the pump has a large diode in series with one of its 120v input leads. The pump works either with this diode, or without. Just wondering why its there?
Thanks

Are you certain it's a diode and not a fusing device? My coffee machine had two of the latter in series with the heating element.
Yes sounds like a PTC fuse or similar.
