Philips 8051 shortages

Anyone know anything about this? I called Kanda today and they say they have been unable to ship some evaluation boards for some time because of shortages of some types of Philips 8051.

There is no shortage of Philips parts. Perhaps you misunderstood what Kanda told you?

I don't think so, I was very specific and so were they. Their technical man said they have not been able to get any 89C66X devices for several months and do not expect the situation to change. Other Philips 8051 variants Kanda use are not affected. Sounds like a shortage to me. Check out there web site where it says quite clearly that the C66 version of their board is not available at present - this is what prompted me to phone Kanda and h their reply was as above. As a result I have ordered the RD2 version instead.

Then you did indeed miss-understand. But let that pass.

There is no shortage of Philips parts.

OK, so that I don't misunderstand in future perhaps you would clarify the situation. My Kanda board arrived today. The one board supports the following Philips 8051 derivatives: P89C51Rx2H,P89C51Rx2,P89C66x and XA-G49. The boards and the documention on CD are common, the only variation is in the chip you choose. At the moment you can choose any of the above chips except the P89C66x series. Why is Kanda can get all the other variants but that one? And with what authority do you speak when you state there is no shortage of Philips parts? Do you speak for Philips?

Hi Chris and Ian,

I think Ian is correct. There seems to be a shortage of particularly the 89C66x devices from Philips. While availability of the LPC900 is good, the 66x is difficult to get.

I heard that Philips recommends to switch to their LPC2104 instead or for those needing more I/O the LPC2114. Pricing is not too much different. The latest announcement the LPC2130 family even has members with 32kB flash and 64 KB flash, so ideal for customers looking for an easy way from 8-bit to 32-bit.

With an ADC, 60 MHz execution from internal Flash and more RAM than the LPC89C668, it ourperformes the 8-bit micro probably by a factor of

10 or more.

Why would you want to use an 8-bit if you can get a 32-bit for pretty much the same price? (I know you might have tools and code for the

8-bit ;-)

Cheers, Schwob
