8051 Source Level Debugger

Hi, I was thinking about using the Hi-Tech 8051 Source Level Debugger. There is not much info on the net about using it. Anyone of you actually used it?

It seems to be handling breakpoints by writing to CODE memory (possible by assuming XDATA actually is the code memory in the target system). My guess is that it changes the code at the very breakpoint to some jump to the debugger. I would like to run it on a FLASH based microcontroller, by changing the XDATA write instructions to chip-specific instructions to actually write to the code memory.

Feel free to give any kind of comments.

Merry XDATA all, no sorry, XMAS.

And the fact that you work for Keil has nothing to do with it o course ;-

I don't work for Keil and never have.

Whilst I do supply l Keil I also supply 6 other makes of compiler. Most which also do an 8051 compiler/debugger.

I stand by the comment that generally the Keil simulator is reckoned by most to be the best simulator purely on technical grounds.

Can you name a technically better simulator/debugger for the 8051?

Thanks for the comments. In this case I explicitly invited to any kind of comments, so don't mind the critics. I am interested in continuing using Hi-Tech and I want to get the most out of it. It could be useful to know that Keils debugger is better. Thank you.

It is easy to use as it supports most of the 600 odd varients, has a scripting language to control it and some "open" interfaces for adding your own peripherals etc.

That said It is not inexpensive..... If you have a system that works then use it. It depends why you are doing it and what you want to achieve.
