Image Sensor Basics

Apr 21, 2006 2 Replies

Is there anybody that can advise me a good course, tutorial, book or pdf to get me started in the field of image sensors.

Google seems to give me only 2 types of information

1) Datasheets of specific sensors ... Too complicated to get me started.
2) Theoretical sites about light and colours, that have little to do with electronics.

If there's anybody with some experience in this field that has used image sensors succesfully, is it possible to explain how YOU got started. Or maybe give me some explanations.

What would really help me would be a site of a step by step guide/instructions on how to implement an image sensor, how to trigger it, how to link it to a microcontroller, how to save images on a CompactFlash card ... etc... Anybody?

Thank you in advance Greetings BramGo

This page provides a listing of sensor manufacturers. You can hit a few of their sites in the hope of finding a nice page on the topic.

This is an excellent introductory article (slightly dated, beware of some broken links) to CMOS image sensors. It also briefly covers some of the major manufacturers (Micron, OmniVision, ST, etc).

I'd recommend looking into the OmniVision evaluation kits if you're trying to get hardware to play with. Unfortunately though, Omnivision doesn't post datasheets on their website. Micron does, but their eval. kits are a little on the expensive side.

Hope that helps.
