Choice of regulator

Look at LDO (low drop out) regulators such as the LM2940CT series. These claim to have a maximum drop out voltage of 1.0V over the entire temperature range and typical dropout of 0.5V at room temperature. They are rated for 1.0A. There are other parts with 3.3A and 5A ratings, but the dropout on those are greater than 1V.

I've got some batteries out of an old camcorder that are 6v and can give out plenty of current, but the 7805's I'm using need 7v, and I don't want to overvolt the stuff being powered at all, so I need a regulator of some sort.

How can I regualte 6v down to 5v? Are there any cheap/small regulators that can do that? If so, please let me know! If there's one that can produce both

5v and 3.3-3.5v at the same time, that'd be even better. I'm not well versed in components, and 7805's are all I've ever used.

Try the 78L05...it needs less overhead. You might also look a number of switching regulators on the Maxim-ic page as well as TI.
