Why do circuit breakers go up for on and down for off?

America is backward and always has been. Do you read from the bottom of the page to the top? Maybe top posters originated in America.

Why rotate them just because you have more phases?

Then why turn it sideways? Have you done that with your TV too? Up and down are easier to remember than left and right.

I doubt glass bounces screws anymore than wood.

I'll tell you what really bounces, a memory foam mattress. I found that out when chucking my camera onto it. It bounced onto the wooden floor and busted the battery cover.

Are Americans very weak? It's 30-50mA here. You need 80mA to stop a human heart. 5 would be a stupidly sensitive breaker.

So much easier without an ELCB. No, I will not call it an RCD. Earth leakage circuit breaker, does what it says on the tin. It's nothing to do with a residual anything. Current doesn't hang about like a residue.

Yes, I'm not saying that Japanese grass and veg is blue, just they (apparently) used the same word to describe both green and blue. I'm not sure whether that explains why their traffic lights are red, amber/yellow and *blue* in colour (as opposed to the words they use to describe those colours).

No, houses here have two wires. It's most obvious where the feed is from overhead wires: you typically see three wires (the three phases) going fro pole to pole along the street, with two branching off from two of those three phase wires, going to a house. The next house may have two wires connected to different phases. Sometimes there are four wires along the street, with one wire to every house connected to the same neutral wire and the other house wire connected to one of the three phase wires.

Earth is provided locally: in older houses with metal water pipes, the green/yellow earth wire is connected to a strap around the rising main water pipe; in newer houses it connects to a big spike in the ground outside.
