I lived in the Castro, the gay mecca, for a couple of years. It was fun and perfectly safe. We had an epic meal last night in the Castro, at the Anchor Seafood restaurant. If they ever cook anything that's not magical, we haven't found it.
At the Folsom Street Fair, the heavy s+m event, I accidentally bumped into a giant bear-guy, huge and hairy and covered with leather straps and not much else. He spun around and said "Ok, ex-cuuuse me!" in a tiny squeaky voice. The boys are nice.

I seriously researched the USA for over six months, to restart my life, and picked SF. People said "but it's full of gay guys" to which the proper response is "and smart beautiful single women."
AIDS and now the work-from-home thing has changed the demographics; more crazy-dual-income breeders and dogs and kids. People meet at google or apple, get married, and move here. Work from home makes it easier to make and care for babies.
(New observation: are gay guys less inclined to have dogs?)

The first time I went there was in the '80s for a semiconductor show. On the approach to the airport a few mountain tops were visible through the fog. I did the usual tourist things, going to Haight-Ashbury 20 years too late, walked across the bridge and took the ferry back, did a couple of museums, saw the City Lights bookstore, and that exhausted my interest in SF.
I was familiar with fog from coastal New Hampshire and Maine and realized SF has a lot better PR screw to sell cold and damp as perfect sweater weather.
I made an appearance at the show long enough to write it off as a business expense with a straight face and headed inland. Joshua Tree was more my speed.
I too did quite a bit of research and traveled around the western states for a bout a year. I was familiar with the area east of the Mississippi. I picked Montana. That was over 30 years ago and I have no regrets.
I hiked a trail through the chaparral somewhere above Berkeley that I probably could never find again. That was my introduction to poison oak. Tam wasn't too bad.
