What do you call it...

Join two 1/4" rods with a sleeve that has set screws?

And where do you get it?

Thanks! ...Jim Thompson

Where can I find such an item.

Last time I used them was for shaft extenders for potentiometers. ...Jim Thompson

Watch the line wrap. Google "set screw coupling" or "shaft coupling" for more.

They sure know how to charge for them. Last plain one I bought cost 89p ($1.20) approx.

IT's so nice to have a lathe around :-p

I know about the larger Mills/lathes, its interesting that they are made in china by Seig ( something like that). Grizzley, Harbor Freight, and microlux all are made by the same mfg, with some minor differences. They all have good reviews for their price point.

I find stuff like that on my lathe all the time.

About 20 minutes on the lathe.

Any well stocked hardware store should have shaft coupling sleeves in their 'weird parts' bin. These are only good for low RPM, where allowances don't need to be made for machinery misalignments.

There's also a whole whack of different couplings that allow some axial misalignment without jamming... K-couplings, helical beam couplings, bellows couplings, Oldham couplings etc.

20 minutes??

Can't you just drill and tap two holes in a chunk of thick wall metal tubing?

put shaft coupling in the search box. Usually not the cheapest but one of the best stocked and great customer service and the best ecommerce web site I know of. Always our first place to look for a onesie or low qty where the time to find it cheaper would cost more than the savings.

If one wanted to cut corners due to lack of machine shop equipment.

Get a threaded rod coupling, drill out the hole and drill & tap the ends. This all can be gotten from a local hardware store..

hell, with the lengths of those couplings, you might be able to cut them in two via a cheap 4.5" portable disc grinder and get two..

I'm always stinking, I mean thinking!

Ok, you asked for it :-)
