I have. Lightning hit a concrete building used as studios & offices for a TV station I worked at. It blew out a lot of chunks, exposing the rebar & heavy threaded rods that held the concrete roof in place. This was in Leesburg, Florida in 1987.

Do you know about the hydration reactions of the setting of concrete?

Concrete has a resistivity on the order of 5k-50k ohm-cm. Not exactly Teflon.

I have. Mostly in cases where the lightening reached the rebar and heated it until an explosion ensued.

Yes - calcium silicates (main ingredient of cement) combine to form rocklike hydrated calcium silicates. There are also aluminates and sulfates that hydrate.

However, I would not count on every water molecule being tightly bonded to something.

was it the old rubber coted wireing that crumbles or sticky when you touch it?

I remember stealing a mates dad's shells, putting them in a vise and hitting them with a hammer... None ever went off, thankfully.

peote milkshakes Deadheads Byrds We had a drummer and clarinet player - old as I am now,and pros. making our own music was-still three of us get on stage a few times a year...

It wasn't until a later post that i noticed this. There is no lead in nitrobenzene. Other than the shot, (not particularly dangerous unless you melt it) which i presume you discarded, what lead do you think there is in shotgun shells? Please sort out your toxic chemicals.

Actually is a mixture of various calcium-aluminum silicates. Heavy on the calcium of course. In the best (normally reads strongest) concretes, all of the water is used in hydration, leaving the resultant material rather alkaline in properties.

Don't be a dork, especially on purpose.

I've been playing with electronics all my life. I started soldering when I was three, sitting in my uncle's lap as he fixed TV's. Electronics involves lead, you know. Please sort out my paragraphs.

John

Sounds a little hygroscopic to me. If it binds every water molecule, it appears to me it is thirsty enough to snag quite a few from the atmosphere and then have a tight grip on only some of those.

Gosh, and i did not start soldering until i was six. I cannot sort out your paragraphs until you sort them out.

Not so much so hygroscopic as having excess OH Minus ions left at end point. I learned a lot by using search engines.

I just made a Jacob's Ladder over the weekend, using a neon sign transformer (15KV@30mA - nice fat 4" arc!) and some music wire. Made it as a prop for a "Mad Scientist's lab" at, believe it or not, the church's Vacation Bible School :-O

It's been a rousing success (except for scaring the pants off one kid) and hasn't killed anybody. Yet. Today's the last day...
