The fireworks which occur when the service power comes back on, will be quite amusing to observe... assuming that one is at a safe distance.

It's like the OP is attempting to do relay logic with the power grid, complete with race conditions and all! I think he should build a relay computer out of those 120 VAC relays and use that to control the transfer switch.

It's impressive to watch them run, since they're so old they're fairly large, completely exposed and slam really hard as well as make nice sparks if you dim the lights.

I've seen utility workers up on their machines, working on power lines, turned off, plus a large clamp from each of the three phases to a local ground point, pounded in especially for the job at hand. One doesn't hear of utility workers being killed over here.

No, but they don't go courting disaster, either. I generally takes several faults for things to go very wrong. That's no reason to *cause* some of them.
