Quote: "GPS was created and realized by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) "

Also note the reference to 'classified studies'. GPS did not really take of for civilian use until that crap was removed.

It was a market, and selling was needed (and still is).

Many things designed by DOD later went 'commercial', including the internet.

SA vas not a real issue for serious civilian use. You could quite often use some form of differential-GPS to compensate for propagation anomalies as well as against SA.

A DGPS subcarrier was added to long wave maritime beacons to guide ships between Finland and Sweden through the archipelago with thousands and thousands islands.

After the SA was removed, many applications did no longer need DGPS, since ordinary GPS was accurate enough.

Only the first five or ten... besides, the shower of splinters make for wicked shrapnel.

I don't get what you mean...

If nothing else, GPS is not the only, or even the best means of guiding a missile in all cases. There was a time before GPS and they haven't forgotten how they worked then.

BTW, The Government doesn't build missiles, military contractors do and they can be pretty durn good at what they do.

Again, I suggest you read the wikipedia entry on GPS. It tells the story how it came into being, and why it was needed in the cold war to guide the ICBMs for example.

Contractors good at what they do? Its all about money! Remember the unencrypted video from the drones watched by the 'enemy', or say locals, :-) with a free Russian sat TV program that anybody could download from the internet. Cost saving for those 'contractors' and brain saving too I am sure it saved them brain cycles.

Much hightech is complete garbage and makes things worse than what it was replacing. For example the old telephone system was reliable and had several days backup in case of power loss. Now just one little fire caused Vodafone users in my country to be with internet and telephone for a day. Imagine a major power failure, all then batteries in them cellphones will be dead in no time... In the old phone system you could pick up the receiver and get a dial tone..

One nuke with EMP and not a single device with modern chips survives. Electric cars, or cars with a lot of board electronics will no longer run, the old Mercedes diesel will though. etc etc etc etc it is all about selling you a new gadget, make belief that it will help you in some way, make you happier. Americans will die of frustration if anything happens and all their gadgets fail. By that reasoning. A joke :-)

Any idea that GPS is used unaided to guide ICBMs is completely mistaken. Even the obsolete Redstones and Polaris missiles had inertial platforms embedded. As do all the more modern ICBMs. GPS was/is mostly useful for guidance of missile launching platforms, including aircraft, that do not always sport their own first class inertial platforms. It is also damn handy for troops including small precision strike squads such as rangers / green berets / navy seals.
