The Simpson 260

** I have a Japanese made analogue meter from the 1970s, similar to the Simpson - 20kohms per volt but with 2 x AAs for the ohms ranges, which reads 45 ohms at the mid point of the X1 range.

It does a bunch of very useful stuff my Fluke 70 cannot:

Reliably read the junctions of BJTs *in circuit* - even with resistors as low as 20ohms installed in parallel.

Light any colour LED brightly including the LEDs in opto-couplers.

Accurately read AC voltages to beyond 20kHz.

It even reads the resistance of a loudspeaker VC in a room filled with LF sound.

I had forgotten some of these advantages because I have not been on field service in about 15 years, but I always took a 260 with me if I could take nothing else.

The 260 has a fairly high voltage output on the ohms scale. As a result you can measure or at least test a multijunction High voltage diode, which you cannot do on a run of the mill DMM (DVM).

If I recall correctly, it has two batteries for ohms measurements. The low ohms is about 1.5V and the high ohms is about 9V.

I am a bit reluctant to open my meter to check the accuracy of my statement here, so beware.

The various mutations of the Simpson 260 use a single 1.5v alkaline D cell for the Rx1 and Rx100 ohms ranges. For the RX10,000 range, it uses either 4ea 1.5v alkaline AA batteries, or an alkaline 9V battery. On later models, the 9V battery also powers some kind of overload detector. Some models have a continuity buzzer feature that I think (not sure) runs on the D battery. If you have the appropriate version number, you can lookup the battery arrangement at: It's usually the bottom photograph.

The following has nothing to do with the Simpson 260 VOM. There are some VOM's that used a 15v or 22.5v battery. If you lack connections to suppliers on Mars, eBay carries some suitable clones. For example: (22.5v) (15.0v) For the 15v (Mallory M-504), I sometimes just stack up five CR1025 lithium 3.0v button cells to get to 15v.

My first DMM was one of these, it used a pair of AAs.

This one uses a single Lithium cell.

A great many DMMs have the battery installed on the PCB and require opening to access it.

This is a safety feature, so the meter cannot be in use when the battery is accessed.

Which series? There have been several design changes over the decades. The series is marked on the meter scale.

That is one of the later models. Look at the manual for an earlier model and you'll see other configurations. Series one used a pair of three volt batteries, plus a 1.5 volt cell.

I ran into the exact same issue- measuring resistance of large transformers. The only meter I had that did the job right was the simpson

260. Granted, it wasn't because it was a Simpson, but because it was a meter of really old design, which for these tasks is really superior to the digital stuff.
