Yep. Inspectors were on the take, SOP in Massachusetts, so substandard concrete was used.

But it's a blue state, what do you expect ?:-)

Hello Jim,

Very sad. These guys wrote a little more on what failed:

That must be one of the biggest pork barrel projects there ever was. And I bet all this was, of course, installed with 100% organized labor.

Natch!

The concrete company was already under civil indictment for fudging the certification records. Knowing Romney, I'd expect some manslaughter charges as well.

That is because in this new touchy feely world the dumb public and media consider incompetence to be much less of a crime than failing to care.

So when faced with a difficult problem they will be praised for trying to solve it even if they fail and make matters worse.

When there are no problems they invent some to help with the increasingly difficult task of justifying their existence.

Oh well, as long as it's not louder than a 747. :)

I know, I know. Tin mining has environmental issues probably too but the clueless ninnies who introduced this farce weren't thinking very far !

Oh I nearly forgot. Lead free solder require more aggressive fluxes I gather and these are causing health in the workplace issues too ! I think the dross is more problematic as well.

There is also that kind of "warranty" on low end items that works like this:

5-year warranty! (large print)

Small print: Return ($4.99 retail) item to us, together with a money order for $10.95 to cover shipping and handling...

Nobody sane is going to pack up an item, pay postage, go stand in line to get a money order for twice the purchase price and then send the stuff off (they'll have thrown the information-- printed on the awkwardly shaped packaging- out within the first day anyay). They can keep a few dusty units around for the nut or two that actually does that. Or just refund the original purchase price after said nutjob puts up a huge fuss and makes multiple long distance phone calls (demand proof of purchase for valuation?-- did you save the receipt?).

Well, Romney wants to be the next President. Public hangings are always good television. ;-)

That's notwithstanding the 20' x 30' x 10' storage shed for all of the "original packaging" stuff. ;-)

This type of fee is not allowed in California... see "Song-Beverly warranty act".

That's some turgid prose:

It sticks the (California) retailer with the costs, right?

No, the manufacturer. The buyer pays one way shipping, and the manufacturer can't charge the bogus fees you mention. It doesn't seem to discourage them from offering warranties. Seems like a reasonable law.

What possible hold do they have over a manufacturer who is out of state, let alone one in Taipei or Guangzhou?

Hello Spehro,

If things become too egregious and the state attorney general gets on the horn this could lead to a situation where that manufacturer no longer has business in the state. Not a good thing.

Naw, it just has to be constrained back to its proper sphere; seeing to it that corporations are held properly in check. This of course means keeping them properly small, and seeing to it that corporate executives bear the full brunt of any law that the corporation violates.
