I just installed one in the guest bath. They are called "pressure-assist". These work quite well but the noise is very intense, sounds almost like a truck in the driveway blew a tire.

Just like with RoHS, one thing that the legislators hadn't thought about is the exisiting plumbing in many US homes. For 3" plumbing at the correct grade you may be ok but for 4" plumbing 1.6 gallons just ain't cutting it to carry things far enough.

We now have a pressure-assist toilet which is flapperless. But it creates an unbelievable racket when flushed. Makes everyone wake up and think the water main burst.

I can sort of imagine. Like the ones on 747s ? They're actually suction aren't they ?

I have to say that this number of flushes thing is thankfully unknown over here. Those who want to save water often put a brick in the cistern btw. Then there's those who advise flushing only after number 2s !

My impression is that ours is almost louder than the ones on a 747.

I once read a thing that was a sort of "control systems overview" - about how whenever you try to influence a particular aspect of a naturally equilibrating system, it makes things worse.

I think a wonderful analogy would be the feedback loop of a(an?) SMPS.

"Oh, well, let's just force this node to 3.7V! That'll fix it!" and, of course, it lets the smoke out.

It seems like it happens every time - da gubmint decides to make some rule "for the good of the people" or, worse, "the good of the chilllldruuuuuuun", and it ends up making things worse than they were before.

The problem is government. Get rid of government, and most of the problems will go away. ;-)

That is great. However, we didn't have much of a choice. Ours must be floor mounted but discharge to the back. If I had a regular plumbing hookup I'd certainly would go for a Japanese Toto or something like that. Many plumbers said these are the best.

Even the federal government here, at one time, consisted of only a few hundred people.

And, yes, we "need" a certain amount of "government" - like when a bunch of neighbors get together and decide to build a volunteer fire department. Or a library. Or a road. And if the road goes to the next town, you check in with the county, where there's sort of a record-keeping place, manned by the county clerk.

I've seen real representative government in action, and it's pretty cool, as far as it goes. When I was just pubescent-ish, my folks invited me to tag along with them to a school board meeting. It was open to the public, and it was a real meeting, with various people speaking, telling why you should vote for this and that, and people talked about it, and voted. In the one case, it was about a "bond issue" to build school facilities. It passed - my Mom and Dad voted for it, because the additional assessment they paid went directly to school facilities - "brick and mortar building money."

The point is, everybody knew what they were voting for, and why.

One problem with the "deomcratic system", however, is that even those who voted against it still had to pay. That's wrong.

Here's what we do - for every new tax, submit it to a referendum. Whoever votes in favor of the tax gets to pay it, and whoever votes against it, doesn't have to.

That'll fix it!

Won't work. If something is for the good of everybody (problem is, many things that are supposed to, aren't) then everybody must pay. But there should be a high threshold for any tax increase. Like the 2/3 majority clause in California. Of course, politicians of a certain party repeatedly expressed a desire to capsize that law. They don't really care that voters were the ones that enacted it. I just hope voters remember.

Korea is going to take care of the California problem.

And assinine leftist weenies, declaring their cities to be "safe havens", thus cutting off FEMA terrorist funds, will take care of the rest of the "nuisance" states.

Also I understand that the "sky is falling" in Boston's "Big Dig".
