Scientists say new disinfectant protects surfaces from coronavirus for 90 days

Kind of amazing, wonder how much trouble it is to apply: The surface coating lasts "significantly longer" than conventional disinfec tants that use alcohol or bleach, which lose their function as the liquids evaporates, according to HKUST. To help achieve this, it relies on heat-se nsitive polymers that its inventors say responds to contamination from touc h or droplets. It does this by releasing a larger amount of disinfectant wh en it senses an increase in temperature that can take place whenever our ha nds touch a surface or when moisture from droplets.

This one must not have worked very well: In terms of infection control, we developed PECD antimicrobial coating, a s terilizer that removes up to 99.99% of different infectious viruses. Using it as a coating on air-particulate filters in air purification systems in h ospitals aids the effort to contain transmission of viruses. The technology was adopted for use at Wuhan?s Huoshenshan Hospital, an emergency hospital constructed specifically to battle the coronavirus outbreak.

What are the side effects of this new product?

So many new compounds appear where the side effects are unknown for years - such as - what is killing all the insects?

Perhaps fungicides?

Any time you want to add a new chemical or biological product to the environment you run the risk of serious side effects that are simply unknown. How do you test? Allow limited use for several years in only one area and monitor all life forms both in and around the area for adverse effects, along with at least one control group, preferably a few.
