Safe sound level estimation for iPod playback

You should start him out on Classical, and 40s and 50s big bands and the like, then work into the sixties.

Butter him up real good, so he knows the true roots of any of the "modern" stuff.

I like my Bose noise-cancelling headphones, but I'd hesitate to recommend them to 11-year-old boys. If they didn't wreck them by being rough with them they'd probably get hit by a bus/car/taxi/streetcar/train while walking with them on.

There is plenty of programs for the laptop / desktop that will normalize = the=20 audio level of masses of files. Rather fewer that will decompress them a= =20 bit. You just have to look for them. Though rescaling all the stuff on = his=20 iPod is a bit of another matter.
