Citation needed.

but so far, i can neither prove nor disprove that. >

KernelEx adds a few APIs to the 9x kernel and **some** APPLICATION programs will then run under that. The MSFN pages list which apps.

KernelEx is NOT a panacea. Trying to tie NT drivers into a 9x kernel is a waste of time.

*AND* "driver" or "drivers".

...and again, trying to tie NT-kernel drivers into a 9x kernel is a waste of time. They are completely different phylums.

Well, there is a mention that Unicows.dll is needed; i presume that KernelEx calls or uses that. Concerning programs on the ASUS CD, nobody (*especially* ASUS) is talking..

Does this help?

"KernelEx won't be loaded if system is booted into safe mode so the user can safely diagnose and fix potential problems."

The joy of the newer operating system releases is that one can set up an executable to "see" a given system when ran. So I can tell my old program that it is running under windows 98, and it will not know otherwise.

Then it comes down to a deeper compatibility involving the registry and any hardware hooks, etc.

With Windows Vista there were a few install apps that I had to tell them they were running under a previous OS or they would puke. Once installed they were fine though.

Nope; seen that & read that; not relevant as it has been (maybe) a year or so since i used "safe" mode. It is useless for 1) attempting to install the ASUS MB CD, 2) trying

*any* video driver, and 3) trying a sound driver that does not work in the first place. Besides KernelEx is supposed to allow one to control its useage - but nobody states how to get to it for that..

Well, for me, "ItsASecretDummy" certainly applies as i did not know that about the newer OSes. But...i have everything i want in Win2K (one of the other three OSes i use) so that does not really help. But thanks for the tip!

"ItsASecretDummy" is just another NymNuts persona, caught automagically by my filters.

Please don't feed the troll.

Call me very confused. I cannot understand the desire to install W98 directly on a MB like that. I would install Linux, VirtualBox and run W98 as a VBox client.

Does the term "directly accessible hardware hooks" mean anything to you?

Linux is not possible; i do not have 6 partitions to support it with the other OSes i use plus the user interface is too geeky for me. Virtual anything if an OS is beyond me now and i would have to install it on a raw drive for experimentation - and maybe after a few months of fiddling and useage could i then make a reasonable decision. And if it is another OS, then i would need 5 partitions. Does not look i could do either.

Only slightly; have no tools or expertise for that, but that sounds like a very good way to solve the problem. What would it cost to have that done?

Reply to
Robert Baer

That was provided as a reason why someone would want an old, DOS based OS to be running on one of his machines.

..and such, perhaps there would be financial reasons to persue that approach. So, what would it cost and whom should i hire?

If he's Archimedes it would fit, as Archimedes has shown a high level skill in excel scripting in earlier posts, and someone with that level of excel is likely to have significant OS expeirience too.

Both Linux are free as downloads. Neither is all that small. If you could get some time on a high speed connection, about 2 hours download time, several days on dial-up. I suppose i could try to build you an install kit. Before that i would ask you to read up on the process some. =20

Linux only needs one partition. I use more as i have plenty of hard disks. Unless i am mistaken, VirtualBox can co-reside on any partition (except for optional swap partitions). I am setting up to play with VB on my alternate machine.
