Yes, but even alt.politics.trump that had a long list of posters is now just a few. Made me think if our evolution theory is wrong.

What worries me is that I got an email or was it SMS from my phone and internet provider that now has a 'number blocking' system that prevents calls from numbers they think are 'bad', I need to subscribe to that 'filter'. Given that the same club blocks rt.com, what other phone numbers and IPs will they block?

Chromium browser does strange things, I always start it from the command line in a Linux terminal as that makes me see all the error messages and warnings when browsing. USENET has always been more of a bar/"pub" than a genuine technical resource. In the past, REAL issues were usually addressed in mailing lists that are more focused and implicitly moderated.

Nowadays, there are countless (literally?) different forums -- with varying sponsors and goals -- to address specific issues about specific technologies and products. And, "membership" is often transitory -- unless you have a long term commitment to <whatever>, it is easiest to just 'drop in" and then "drop out".

Well, things depend. VHDL reflectors (emailing lists) are for standardization, whereas comp.lang.vhdl is general. They are all genuine technical resources for real issues.

Team-Ada is a LISTSERV for promoting Ada, like an advocacy newsgroup. It is not a genuine technical resource, whereas various different Ada email lists and comp.lang.ada are genuine technical resources. (S.

They are considerably more *focused* than USENET. E.g., they likely don't discuss *spice unless it is to highlight differences in the technologies.

I see ~600 posts on c.l.ada going back over 2 years. So, that's (an average of) one a day? As to the amount of "technical content"... <shrug> I don't read the group so can't comment.

It has been dead for several years on most of the scientific groups.

sci.astro.research [moderated] recently celebrated having the first on topic post this year that got through moderation.

sci.chem has very few on topic posts a year if that. Most of the postings there are by a bot that summarises quarterly statistics.

No Usenet was pretty much dead in the water nearly a decade ago.

sci.electronics.design is almost unique in the sci.* hierarchy in that it still has a community of regular posters mostly on topic.

I'd put that closer to *two* decades. We used to have "thoughtful" topics (not "how do I wire up <whatever>") that required a very deliberate balancing of conflicting and competing issues (which, IMO, is the essence of engineering; not "how to replicate what I/you have already done")

There is little need for USENET, nowadays. Mailing lists, forums, "support communities", etc. all target very specific issues instead of such broad generalizations.

The downside is you have to explicitly interact with most of those (web-based) portals whereas USENET "comes to you".
