Scientists build a nuclear clock that could make atomic clocks obsolete Researchers in Vienna have built the world’s first self-stabilizing nuclear clock, bringing scientists closer to a new era of ultra-precise timekeeping. Date: October 10, 2026 Source: Vienna University of Technology Summary: Scientists in Vienna have achieved a major breakthrough in timekeeping by creating the world’s first self-stabilizing nuclear clock, a technology that could eventually surpass even the most precise atomic clocks. Instead of relying on electrons in atoms, the clock uses the tiny nuclei of thorium atoms, which are far less sensitive to outside disturbances.
Mmh. They state an error of one second in 30M years. That's a relative error of 1e-15. I was convinced that the state-of- the-art atomic clocks were in the 1e-18 ballpark. This new clock will only have to get more than a thousand times better then.
