Could some electronics guru please provide pointers to standard power transformer(for bench top power supplies) standards, specifically for the US ? Each time I Google for it, I get directed to some IEC Web sites, but I want information specific to the US. Any hints, suggestions would be of immense help.

To get anything more specific you may have to go slogging through
UL's jumble of files.
The USA, like the majority of the rest of the World is using the IEC standards in such devices. There are different IEC standards for medical devices. You might find some links at UL.

UL1585 for Class2 and Class3 transformers.
UL also certifies transformer insulation systems (OBJS2) of compatible tested materials, with varying temperature classes.
It's easier to apply a standard to the completed unit, (class 2 power units ANSI/UL1310) than it is to find a standard relevent to one specific component in it. After all, you are likely not just building the transformer, or you wouldn't be asking the question.

Not really sure what you want to know. A long time ago i learned that
1000 circular mils per ampere of current was standard conservative design for 60 Hz power transformers. (copper loss thermal rise, laminated cores) and 500 circular mils for "aggressive" designs. In these days of SMPS most of these "rules of thumb" don't mean much. Serious loss calculations and thermal design are really required. Up to you. Provide enough detail on the requirements and what you have tried to calculate yourself first.?-)
