But, USB power is current-limited, it isn't generally possible to make massive overcurrent. The center pins are as bad as the outer ones, and the center pins only carry small signals.
It's a plating (solder plating?) adhesion problem, IMHO. Clean, flux and resolder the surfaces, or tack-solder a pigtail-and-socket. Standard (leadfree SAC or lead/tin) solder isn't as good as tin/silver solder for this kind of plating.
