That one is a bit crap. It isn't really a NAS, more an external drive which uses an ethernet connection.

Moons ago, i asked if there were a linux distro that I could use to update my current ubuntu box. Requirements were, download iso, burn to cd, insert cd, do deafult timzone etc. prompts, walk away, come back to working os.

I did that with vista. I did not do that with ubuntu (although it was close). Ubuntu is the best linux distro I have used, care to suggest another? I am about to do an install this weekend. If i have to f*ck around with it, its out. I dont have time.

it sounds like you want NAS, (Network attached storage)

A case with a nice big fan (hard drives like it windy) a bunch of disks with (probably) software raid-6 or just mirroring and a low maintenance operating system running the fileserver.

If it's not simple mirroring I prefer software raid to hardware raid, because whereas if it's proprietry hardware raid controller and fails you've got extra work to recover your data.

That sounds like what Radium is after in the way of sound cards :)

But, he IS the dog, and I've just used this big ole bar of lye soap to clean his eyes, (And they said it had too much lye in it!). Now its time to use the wire brush dipped in turpentine to clean under his tail! I tried a corn cob, but the stupid dog ate it. :(

Next is his flea collar. Do you have ANY idea how hard it is to make a collar out of live fleas? ;-)

Exactamente.

I can certainly do the big box thing and have one large RAID machine in the basement. But I wanted to keep it small and simple, plus I don't need terabytes of storage.

Considering the number of people who run small networks at home I was thinking there'd be enough of a market for backup and file sharing across a LAN or WLAN. It doesn't have to be industrial strength, for example it would be ok if the whole thing quits upon a power supply failure as long as that doesn't take the data with it.

They don't have to "believe" anything Munchausen! Unlike you I post verifiable cites and message IDs.

If you've got a spare PC (doesn't have to be fancy, but preferably solid & reliable), you can throw some big hard disks into it & install SME-server on it: The software's free, it does RAID on standard disks, it's very well maintained, sets up from a single bootable CDROM & is managed from a web interface. I've been using it here for about 6 years, & recommend it to people all the time.

I might just have to go that route if I don't find something off the shelf soon. But from looking at the web site this stuff seems to be for Linux experts. Which I am not :-(

Ah, nothin' to it - if it does, just say, "Oh, didn't you know who my girlfriend was? I married her. It's just that you stay so young and beautiful that I still have that 'girlfriend' feeling. "

I was reading about some region in Afghanistan where is it a killing-level insult for any stranger, not immediate family, to even

*see* your wife or daughter. Interesting how westerners tend to show off our wives/gf's/kids, and how far some cultures go to hide them.
