I'm missing something. If they are in good enough condition to use for housing why are they no longer useful for shipping?

Is it something simple like well used shipping containers are good enough for housing and shippers are willing to pay a bit more for good condition?

There are different grades and conditions. If it has a dent or a hole, they don't use it for shipping. It's still usable to convert to a storage building, or use a pair to build a home.

But that doesn't mean that their policies have much to do with the price of wheat in Egypt. Wheat isn't involved in the corn to ethanol scam, and the US certainly isn't the only - or the major - grower of wheat.

In 2009 you produced 8.8% of the world crop and were the four largest producer. This is inconsistent with the idea that your internal politics are messing up the supply of wheat in e Egypt.

Not so much an analysis as an exercise in wishfull thinking. The British Daily Telegraph - or Torygraph as it is populalrly known - can be relied to roll out right-wing nonsense at every opportunity.

In fact - as the article goes on to say - the real problem was the bad wheat harvest in Russia last year - the worst for 130 years. If the harvest had been better, Ben Bernanke could have signalled any number of dollar blitz's without doing anything to food prices, and if Ben Bernanke had been more reticent, something else would have triggered the panic buying.

It doesn't make it any less nonsensical.

US is a significant player, due to shifting of wheat farming to corn farming combined with major reduction of exporting of corn.

USA used to be the world's breadbasket exporter of grains. Much less so now, since USA largely withdrew its former huge swupply to the global grain market.

Global demand for wheat had a sharp increase in response to the sharp decrease of the global supply of corn - whose price also had a sharp increase due to sharp increase of USA internal demand for corn for internal non-food purposes.

USA corn ethanol production for motor fuel actually had a few years ago slight and lately more-than-slight "positive energy efficiency". However, this gets into matters of whether choose to add supply to food markets or to choose to add supply to motor fuel markets.

Furthermore, USA has opportunity to satisfy both rather than having to choose between 2 options. USA has a lot of land useful to farming switchgrass and not useful to farming grasses/grains that humans, cattle, horses, chickens, or turkeys eat at all or make better use of switchgrass in the unlikely event that these animals are even much willing to eat switchgrass. It is easy to farm switchgrass in probably half a million square Km or more of USA rural land that has yet to be farmed 2 or 3 years in a row!

And furthermore, switchgrass is fairly widely mentioned to be more efficient for farming to produce ethanol than corn is.

It appears to me that USA has a much stronger "corn lobby" than USA has a "switchgrass lobby".

Bullshit. I have relatives who are farmers, and am proud to say that not ONE of them has EVER accepted a government "bribe."

It's because nobody's shipping anything to China, and China makes their own containers to ship everything from Tickle Me Elmo dolls to Refrigerators to Big-Screen TeeVees and so on, and it's cheaper to just ship a new container made of Chinese steel than to scrap them and ship them back.

Ain't it great to be so rich that we can get other people to manufacture stuff, to free up our labor to create the next new wave of innovations so that China and everybody can copy them and sell us products cheap? :-)

Wyoming is pretty flat though with near perfect laminar airflow. These turbines in the UK are typically sited in hilly terrain with quite serious amounts of wind sheer and often above villages in quiet valleys where under the wrong conditions the noise gets focussed. It only really causes trouble when the wind is in the wrong direction blowing the sound towards the unfortunate recipients. The blade tip wake vortex is actually a chunky low frequency spiral shaped change of air pressure. I posted the photo earlier in the thread.

Research here suggests that the bright white blades attract insects and the insects attract birds. Once the blade air speed exceeds 50mph birds are not equipped to avoid them. Having said that I have more than once seen whole flocks of pigeons smashed to pieces on HT transmission lines (and the lines were not moving at all).

And has been ever since Henry Ford invented the motor car. The Japanese and European makers are now at a fleet average of in excess of 40mpg. Cars with MPG figures of 50-60mpg are not uncommon here. Even luxury cars like BMWs can do 55mpg cruising at 80+mph - less good in town.

There is no common sense in the US car making industry. They stick a huge engine in everything and then neuter its terrible exhaust mix of partial combustion products with insanely complex catalytic converters and boutique fuel mixtures. Dirt cheap fuel means until very recently they barely mentioned the mpg figures at all. People liked to buy vastly oversized SUVs with the aerodynamic styling of a brick fitted with hopelessly inefficient engines. Maybe it will change, but I think it will need another serious oil shock to do it.

It will mostly annoy China and Japan who have their savings propping up your economy.

Sticky back foam insulation tape can't be all that expensive for putting around window and door frames.

Windows are insanely expensive, but the loft insulation should be quite cheap. By the sound of it you may only need one roll anyway...

That does seem incredibly low. Do you live in a one room hermit's hut or cave or something?

From which denialist propaganda web-site did you get that nonsense? Anthropogenic global warming is getting worse by the decade, and after a century or two we could start running into catastrophes of one sort or another.

Think about the Younger Dryas - some 12000 years ago - when the Gulf Stream turned off for 1300 years. The turn-on and turn-off - and the dramatic accompanying climate changes - happened within a decade.

If we managed to engineer that sort of effect, we could produce a fairly dramatic population crash. Nobody is saying that the Gulf Stream is going to turn off, but the ocean currents can do odd things if you mess about with the climate.

That not what paleology tells us. You should read a bit about what is now known to have happened in the recent geological past.
