OT: Mozilla lost tons of email

Hello Don,

I still hate it...

Multi-tasking is one of those promises that Windows never lived up to IMHO. I believe it's a lot of hot air. Lots of times you run something and the machine just won't switch to another task until completion. Ridiculous. So now I need two PCs to keep up my productivity. For DOS I had a task switcher and believe it or not I could hot-switch via F-keys. So I needed only one PC. Pathetic.

Hello Jim,

Yes, folders would work. However, unlike Eudora Mozilla is unable to automatically search through those AFAIK.

Let's hope they don't californicate all of us now :-)

BTW did you find a good MPSA64 SPICE model?

Hello Fred,

I did that and they all were correct. Pointing to "All" except for Sort which is set to "date, ascending, unthreaded" like usual. Do you remember the French menu words?

BTW deleting the inbox.msf file didn't do a thing. It rebuilt it alright but the messages are still gone.

Thanks. Yes, these are the same. They just sound nicer in French. My favorite word is retro eclairage (LCD backlight).

I turned that feature off, it was causing crashes. Probably because I have a bunch of really big mailboxes adding up to almost 2G.

How in the world do you have 2GB mailboxes ???

My whole Eudora folder stack is 1.17GB, and that's mostly attachments, most of which I could trash because copies have been copied to client directories on another machine.

Firefox uses Acrobat to display PDFs so if Acrobat is not running it has to wait for it to start. If Firefox appears to lock-up, killing Acrobat using Task Manager unlocks it. Firefox is waiting for Acrobat and Acrobat sometimes freezes or won't refresh the display if the download of the PDF stalls. There are alternative PDF viewers and there is also an extension for Firefox that downloads the full PDF then externally launches Acrobat rather than displaying the PDF in Firefox.

In the Firefox options (On the Tools menu) there is a setting: "Show the downloads window when downloading a file". Uncheck this and the download manager won't appear.

That's the total. The biggest individual mailbox is around 100M. My current (heavily filtered) in box from March 2006 to present is 72M.

Eudora seems to get less stable when any individual mailbox gets too big.

Forgot the attachment folder. That's another 412M.

My attachment directory is 703MB ;-)

What I do is keep ~2-3 months worth in the IN/OUT boxes. The rest go into folders like 2006/IN0106, etc.

Yet, with EP v7, I can search back the whole 5 years in seconds ;-)

Actually, as I am reasonably new to FireFox, after playing around with it for a few days, I just decided I didn't want the download manager, so I switched it off. :-)

My old boss Tim had to get a corporate exemption on mail box size, which is usually limited to 750Meg. (I hit that limit about 4 times a year, and go through and delete a lot of older stuff...) He kept EVERYTHING in his inbox, and never deleted anything, even the silly 'reminder' and 'notifier' emails we get everyday. Three years ago he hit 2Gig, I shudder to think what it is today...

Joerg, I can recommend mailwasher from

which allows to inspect email before downloading them. It shows the headers and either uninterpreted content or raw content. A click and the spam is deleted right from the server before download are. With whitelist, blacklist, filters, the lot.

Done that, too. The only useful hint that I got out of a similar search was that all the mails in the large inbox file might have been flagged deleted. According to a Mozilla bug hint shown by Google the recovery from that would be utterly painful, editing some kind of code snippet "back to normal" in zillions of places in that large file. Oh man, I hope there is an easier way.

Some of us, using UltraEdit, could edit "back to normal" in "zillions of places" in a matter of seconds ;-)
